Summary
The objective of the Nurse Intern/Extern Program is to: refine skills used in the nursing process; develop cognitive and psychomotor skills; foster an understanding of the intern/extern's role within the interdisciplinary team in developing the plan of care; develop priority setting and decision making skills; help the intern/extern identify his/her clinical strengths and weaknesses; identify learning needs and ways to address them. With the Registered Nurse Preceptor, the intern/extern assists the registered nurse in providing optimal/quality patient care.
- Applications must include an attached Resume or Cover Letter that includes clinical practice experience, volunteer or community involvement activities, two (2) letters of recommendations from nursing instructors, and a brief statement addressing why you are the best candidate for this opportunity.
- Upon successful completion of the Intern program, as determined by Johnston Health, the intern/extern may be offered employment from available open staff nurse positions. This program allows for an extended relationship with a nurse candidate and preceptor. The intern/extern candidate will have immediate access to tuition reimbursement for the last semester of school not to exceed the limits of the tuition reimbursement policy.
- The candidate must be in the top 30% of their class. They must have 2 nursing instructor recommendations. One of the instructors must be from the clinical rotations. The intern/extern program will be equal to an average of 8 hours per week for duration of semester (to be worked in 4, or 8 hour increments, though 8 hour increments are preferred). Content in the instructor recommendations should speak to the following components:
- Acceptable Attendance
- Commitment Ability- schedule/ studies
- Examples of clinical aptitude
- Ability to recognize their own educational boundaries/ scope
- Strong organizational skill
- Schedule to be determined with preceptor availability/ schedule
- Understanding and delivering holistic patient care with a focus on empathy
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Nursing Enrollment in an accredited ADN or BSN program. Successfully complete his/her junior year in a Baccalaureate Degree nursing program or first level in an Associate Degree nursing program and be currently enrolled In that same program. High School diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a Level I-Nurse Aide education program approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Currently listed as a Nursing Assistant I (NA I) with the Division of Facility Services with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect or misappropriation of property. BCLS certification must be current and maintained
